Pediatric Diabetes Treatment
Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body is unable to use food for energy in the right way. Managing diabetes can be scary and confusing if you don't have all the facts. Armed with the right information, you can stay on top of your symptoms. As you are the most important member of your healthcare team, we want you to know as much as possible.
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. Scientists do know that in most people with type 1 diabetes the body's own immune system — which normally fights harmful bacteria and viruses — mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing (islet) cells in the pancreas. Genetics may play a role in this process, and exposure to certain viruses may trigger the disease.
There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be managed. Depending on the type of diabetes you have, you and your doctor will come up with a plan that works for you.
This treatment may include:
- Self-testing of blood glucose levels
- A sensible exercise plan
- Good nutrition
- Insulin use or other medication
- Regular checkups
